Panels at AAS 2014: Spatial Studies of Chinese Religions and Society

Co-organized by the China Data Center of the University of Michigan and the Center for Chinese Religion and Society, the special panel on "Spatial Studies of Chinese Religions and Society" attracted more than 20 participants at the 2014 annual meeting of Association for Asia Studies in Philadephia on March 30, 2014. The panel reported recent progress on some collaborative works on spatial network for religious studies on China, including database and spatial system development, researches on methodology for spatial analysis, and historical religion studies. Those studies provided new insights into religions and society in China through integrating social, economic, demographic, religious, and geographical information in time and space. 

The panel includes the following presentations: A Spatial Study of Religion and Urbanization in China by Shuming Bao of the University of Michigan; Churches, Temples and Mosques in China: A Spatial Study of Religion in Social Context, by Fenggang Yang of Purdue University; National Shortage of Protestant Church in China: A Spatial Perspective by George Hong of Purdue University Calumet; and Further Thoughts on Regional Religious System (RRS): Theoretical and Methodological Issues by Jiang Wu of the University of Arizona.
